Unused spaces are being taken over by ­volunteers with knowledge – both basic and advanced – to create something special, a ­project to both bring residents together and provide fresh food for the community. For a musical duo with a name like The Bookshop Band, there is ­probably nowhere more ­appropriate to live than Wigtown. But it was, in part, sheer luck that brought Ben Please and Beth Porter to the book town in the Machars. Millennium Football Club

Millennium Football Club over a decade ago had only 15 players and two ­coaches. The club was created to ­improve the physical fitness, self-discipline and motivation of young people in ­Stranraer. Fast forward 12 years and Millennium FC has evolved to ­become a formalised club with over 160 children – of all ages – taking part in weekly training sessions and ­competitive matches.
