THE former Harbourmaster’s office in Stranraer is to be transformed into an exhibition centre.

Alterations and an extension are to be made to the building on the waterfront that marks the entrance to Stranraer’s harbour.

Since 2012, it has been empty and deteriorating. The building and weighbridge were given listed status as Category C in 2004.

The plan is to have a centre open to the public, and available for use by different community groups to promote sea-based activities.

A small public square will be formed, which will “celebrate Stranraer’s relationship with the sea”, and the existing building will contain an exhibition about the building and the harbour.

The plans have the support of the Dumfries and Galloway Natural History and Antiquarian Society, who want to see the building brought back to use, to “enhance” Stranraer.
